James Augustus Henry Murray was a Scottish lexicographer, best known for his pioneering work on A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles. Already a well-known philologist, he began work on an inventory of words used in English from the 12th century onward, a monumental undertaking, made possible by his knowledge and organizational skills.
